Staring down the course as he waited for the starting tape to go up, young jockey Gerry Scott knew it wasn’t just the thousands of spectators in the stands who were watching – but now also millions sitting in their living rooms. On March 26, 1960 – 65 years ago today – the world’s greatest horse race, the Grand National, was being shown live on TV for the first time, an historic moment which wasn’t lost on any of the 26 riders getting ready to gallop off.
