Indian athlete Nitin Gupta lost out on a gold medal at the Asian Under-18 Athletics Championships due to premature celebration. The boys’ 5000m racewalking gold went to China’s Zhu Ninghao after he pipped Nitin by the slimmest margin of 0.01s.
Nitin Gupta, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was forced to settle for silver in the meet, which is taking place in Saudi Arabia. Nitin had the lead in the final stages of the boys’ 5000m racewalk final, however, he broke into a celebration before crossing the finishing line. This momentary mistake allowed Zhu Ninghao to overtake Nitin and clinch the gold medal.
While the momentary clocked 20:21.50s for gold, Nitin registered a heartbreaking timing of 20:21.51s.
