Fans have expressed strong disapproval after American President Donald Trump backed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion of renewing ice hockey matches between the two nations. This comes amid ongoing tensions caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Kremlin claimed that during a phone call between Trump and Putin on 18 March, the US leader supported Putin’s idea of organising a hockey match involving Russian and American players playing in the National Hockey League (NHL) and Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) clubs.

Trump’s alleged backing of Putin’s idea has led to significant backlash, especially from Ukrainian communities living in Canada and the United States. The White House, in its press release after the call between Trump and Putin, did not mention anything about hockey.
