Manchester United goalkeeper
Andre Onana has found himself at the center of growing scrutiny after being dropped for the club’s match against Newcastle United on Sunday. Head coach Ruben Amorim revealed the reason behind his decision to sideline the Cameroonian player as his side suffered yet another defeat.
Onana, who has faced increasing criticism for his poor performances since joining from Inter Milan for $61 million last summer, was not even included on the bench at St James’ Park. Instead, Altay Bayindir was handed a rare start. But the decision backfired as Bayindir too made costly mistakes in the game and they lost 4-1.
Amorim has clarified that his decision to drop Onana was driven by a need to let the player “disconnect” following a difficult outing against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League last week. Speaking to Sky Sports before the game, Amorim stood by his call to rest Onana, explaining the importance of managing a player’s mental state.
