Jockeys protest and meeting called off after rider suspended over explosive TV interview
Grant Van Niekerk was stood down at Durbanville after making complaints about South African racing’s governing body, resulting in a riders’ protest and the cancellation of the fixture
A race meeting had to be called off on Wednesday after jockeys protested at the suspension of a leading rider. On Tuesday Grant Van Niekerk was issued with a 21 day riding ban and fined £2,000 for causing interference in a race at Kenilworth on March 15 despite pleading not guilty to the charge.
