Japanese GP starting grid changed as F1 star gets brutal penalty after Hamilton drama
Carlos Sainz has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix after impeding Lewis Hamilton on his final flying lap in Q2. The Spaniard will now start 15th, having initially qualified 12th. Hamilton was entering Turn One to start his flying lap with Sainz on the inside of the corner, having just completed his.
The seven-time world champion was forced to take avoiding action, which led to him aborting his lap in the first sector. Sainz was promptly placed under investigation, and after a brief trip to see the stewards, he was slapped with a three-place grid penalty. This drops him behind Fernando Alonso, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda on the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
