Arjun Erigaisi, meanwhile, defeats Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in 41 moves to go 1-0 up in their fifth-place playoff.

Freestyle Chess Paris Leg Finals Live Updates: Magnus Carlsen goes 1-0 up in his dream showdown against Hikaru Nakamura in the ‘City of Light’ after winning Game 1 of the final in 36 moves while playing with white pieces. Hikaru was steering the game towards a draw until committing a blunder in what would prove to be his final move of the evening.
 
In the other games on Sunday, Arjun Erigaisi defeats Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in 41 moves after bossing a majority of the game to collect his third win in four games and inch closer to a fifth-place finish. And Ian Nepomniachtchi, who had lost to Arjun on Saturday, goes 1-0 up in his seventh-place battle against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
