Explained: Why Supreme Court wants inquiry panel for 'deeper' probe into sports associations in India

The Supreme Court of India has suggested it may appoint an inquiry commission to conduct a ‘deeper’ probe into the functioning of national and other sports associations, noting that they are engaged in everything but sporting activities.

The Supreme Court of India has suggested that it could appoint an inquiry commission to conduct a “deeper” probe into the functioning of national sports federations, as they are undertaking everything else apart from sporting activities.

The hard-hitting comments from the Supreme Court came during the hearing of a plea filed by two national Kabaddi players. In the same plea, the SC had already asked for views on a CBI probe into the affairs of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation.

“We are inclined to appoint a commission of inquiry for a deeper probe into the affairs of Kabaddi associations because other than sports activities all kinds of things are happening in these bodies. We also intend to then expand the scope of commission of inquiry to other sports associations,” a bench comprising of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said on Friday.
