Explained: Why Brazil have sacked coach Dorival Junior with FIFA World Cup Qualifiers still underway

Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF) had appointed Dorival Junior coach of the five-time world champions in January last year, hoping the former Flamengo and Sao Paulo boss would end the nation’s wait for a sixth world title that has spanned more than two decades.

Dorival Junior was sacked as full-time manager of the Brazil football team on Friday, a little over a year after he was put in charge of one of the most celebrated teams across sport. The former defensive midfielder was hired by the the Confederation of Brazilian Football’s (CBF) with the aim of helping ‘Selecao Canarinho’ end their wait for a sixth world title that has spanned more than two decades.

Dorival, however, finds himself without a job with Brazil’s qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup still underway, following the team’s humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals and reigning world champions Argentina.

“Dorival Junior is no longer in charge of the Brazilian national team. The management thanks him and wishes him success for the rest of his career,” the CBF said in a statement.
